Ace The Final · Grade Calculator

Grade calculator — what's your grade in the class right now?

Not your hoped-for grade. Your actual one — built from the tests, assignments and quizzes you've already handed in, weighted the way your syllabus weights them.

How it works

  1. List your graded work — tests, assignments, labs, participation: everything with a mark so far.
  2. Enter each score and its weight — use your syllabus's categories (exams 50%, homework 20%…) or each item's share of the total points.
  3. Get your current grade — a percentage and a letter, based only on work already graded.
  4. Pair it with the final-grade calculator — feed this number into 'what do I need on the final' and you have the full picture: where you stand, and what the final has to do.

Why the gradebook number can mislead you

Most LMS gradebooks show a running average of what's been graded so far — and early in a course that's mostly light work: homework and quizzes at small weights. A shiny 93% in week six can quietly be a B waiting to happen once the 40% final lands. The fix is weighting: a category's influence on your grade is its syllabus weight, not the number of items in it.

The math: your grade is the sum of (category average × category weight), counted over the categories completed so far. Ten homework assignments at 95% with a 10% weight contribute 9.5 points. One midterm at 78% with a 40% weight contributes 31.2. The midterm is the story; the homework is the garnish.

Knowing your real weighted grade does two useful things: it kills false confidence (and false panic — sometimes you're doing better than the raw average suggests), and it tells you exactly how much room the final has to move you, which is the number the final-grade calculator turns into a target.

Questions students actually ask

Why is my grade here different from Canvas/Blackboard?

Usually weighting. If the LMS is averaging all items equally while your syllabus weights categories, the numbers diverge. Enter your syllabus's category weights here and this figure is the one to trust — after checking it against the syllabus yourself.

What do I do with a dropped lowest score?

If your instructor drops the lowest quiz or assignment, leave that item out of your list entirely. The calculator then reflects the drop the same way your final grade will.

How do I handle extra credit?

Add it as an item with its points included in its category — most simply, raise that assignment's score by the extra credit earned. If your instructor adds extra credit to the whole course, add the points to your strongest weighted category and note the figure is approximate.

My class is points-based, not weighted. What then?

Enter each item's points earned out of points possible and treat 'weight' as points possible — or just add up everything: total earned ÷ total possible so far is your current grade. Points systems are the simple case.

Can I use this mid-semester?

That's exactly when to use it. A mid-semester weighted grade plus the final's weight tells you — with the final-grade calculator — the range of final grades still available to you, while there's still time to change the inputs.
